  2. Hi Sunil
I’d suggest you to read documentations and some Oracle books. Refer to tahiti.oracle.com and there you can find 2 Days Administration Guides which will guide you through the basic administration tips
Moreover, you should practice a lot. Without practicing, you will not be able to learn more
I’d suggest you to refer to Oracle Ace Tonguc Yilmaz’s well written article, related with Oracle Introduction for newbies. You can find it from below link:

Good Luck. Keep reading, practicing and asking your questions (of course after google-ing it 😉 ) on OTN forums 🙂

  6. Hi Krishna. The link of the book is on my home page 🙂 But this book hasn’t finished yet, so when it’ll be finished, I’ll inform you
In this book, you’ll see many different scenarious which every DBA may face in his career

hello kamran. i want to learn oracle and start a career as dba. i am a rhce. but am confused which exam i will go for. will i go for 9i dba exams or 10g dba exams particularly. and there is also 11g. plz advice me which way to go? i also want to learcn rac. and another q, is it necessary to learn pl/sql if i work as dba.

thx for this wonderful blog. i have completed installing 10g on centos 5.3 using virtualbox v3.

  8. Hi aniruddha and welcome to my blog
If you’re at the beginning of Oracle career, don’t try to start from exam. Try to read some docs (Administrators Guide and Concept) from http://tahiti.oracle.com

Then, I’d suggest you to read Sybex books to prepare to Oracle exams. Yes, there’re mainly 3 different versions in Oracle which you can give an exam. 9i is not supported version of Oracle but to be more successful, I’d suggest you to start learning from 9i. Because there’re many things that were automated in 10g. By starting from 10g or 11g, you may be aware of some Oracle features (especially in Performance Tuning). It’s my suggestion. But you can even start from 11g. It’s the new supported version
But remember, to be 11g OCP by having any 9i or 10g exam, you’ll need to pass only one “New Features” exam. It’s the same for 10g. If you passed 9i exams, you’ll need to pass only one exam to be 10gOCP and another one exam to be 11gOCP

It’s necessary to know SQL and PL/SQL to be successfull DBA. You don’t need to learn PL/SQL at developers level, but you need to know some basics as well

    Good Luck!

thx a lot kamran for ur suggestion. i will surly start from oracle 9i.

Salam Kamran muallim . Man ozum Java proqrammistam . Lakin hala hech vaxt Oracle-la islamamisam . Esasen MySQL -le ishlemisem . Database-ler haqqinda yaxshi melumatim var .PL/SQL-i ise bilmirem .
    1. Siz mana hansi kitablari maslahat gorerdiniz ki baslayim oxumaga ?
    2. Eger praktiki masalalarda tetbiq ede bilmeyecemse oxumagin na daracada faydasi olacaq (sadece bizim proyektde Oracle tetbiq edilmir 😦 )

  11. Salam Rufat

Evvela sen ozune kankret bir yön secmelisen. DBA olmaq isteyirsen yoxsa Developer? Onlar ferqli ferqli seylerdi.

En tovsiye etdiyim kitab, “PL/SQL by examples” kitabidi (fourth edition).

Basically I m pursuing BE Computer Engg. , and I have lot interest in Database, Datawarehousing & Data Mining.
I want to pursue my career in DB Administration or Warehousing.

Q.1 : Is BE + OCA sufficient for starting career in databases ?
Or are there any other courses that can help me get into Dataware housing ?

Q.2 : What is scope as fresher ? What things I need to consider for getting entry level job as junior DBA ?

Thanx for ur help in advance.
Hope ur advice helps me brighten up my future…..ofcourse as DBA

  13. Dear Tanny

I think that you’ll start your Oracle career as a Junior DBA. But one thing should be mentioned that administering VLDB (Very large database – data warehouse) and OLTP systems are different. So you need to make a decision for that.

I’d suggest you to read documentation, read some certification books and practice, practice and practice

    Good Luck !

Nice to know you, i’m from indonesian. Would you like to help me…I have problem with my oracle database. My Server harddisk was broken but i can recovery the data back. I have installed new OS and oracle 10g in new harddisk. Can I replace the datafile with my old datafile ?

    Thank you sir

    Samuel Eric T

  32. Dear Samuel
If you have RMAN backup you can perform disaster recovery and recover the database on the different server. Look at the following video tutorial:

Moreover, you can rename datafile using ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE in the MOUNT stage
    Good Luck

    Dear Mr. Kamran Agayev,

Hello sir, would you like to help me ? When I connect to oracle 10g by TOAD or connect by sqlplus, I got this message :
    ORA-01578: oracle data block corrupted (file # 1, block # 38557)
    ORA-01110: data file 1: ‘c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\oradata\orclkdi\system01.DBF’

I have no backup for system01.dbf datafile. Can you give some information to fix it ?

    Thanks you very much.

    Eric Tololiu

  34. Dear Eric

Why you don’t have backup of the SYSTEM tablespace? Don’t you know that if you lose the SYSTEM tablespace without having its backup, it means that you lost your database at all! Be careful and take dailiy backups (I hope you’re currently running on the test db)
If you haven’t backup of the database and you got a Data Block error, use DBMS_REPAIR to mark the block corrupted. For this, you need to create a REPAIR_TABLE using DBMS_REPAIR.ADMIN_TABLES procedure. Then use CHECK_OBJECT procedure to look for the corruption and update REPAIR_TABLE. Then use SKIP_CORRUPT_BLOCKS to tell Oracle to skip the corrupted blocks and use FIX_CORRUPT_BLOCKS to mark the block as a software corrupted

If you want to be an Oracle DBA, you need to read a lot and practice everything you read. I’d suggest you to start reading documentation (Concepts and Administrators Guide) from http://tahiti.oracle.com address.
